DOJ Attorney General Says Supreme Court Review of Voter Roll Cases Is Possible

Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated the Justice Department may ask the Supreme Court to intervene in dozens of cases where federal judges have blocked its request for state voter-roll data ahead of the November midterms.

Attorney General Todd Blanche told NBC News’ "Meet the Press" that the Justice Department could seek Supreme Court review of the 22 cases it has lost so far concerning access to state voter-roll information. The cases arise from a former executive order that required states to provide names, birth dates, addresses, driver’s-license numbers and the last four digits of Social Security numbers, which the department says are needed to investigate potential registration anomalies, including non-citizen voting.

Federal judges in states such as Oregon and Michigan have ruled in favor of at least 22 states that challenged the request, and the Justice Department has sued 30 states and the District of Columbia for non-compliance. While some states have voluntarily supplied the data, others, including several led by Republican governors, argue that election administration is a state responsibility.

"Election integrity is something that President Trump ran on, and the American people elected him. It’s something that every American should care about," Blanche said.

"We’re not going to stop doing what I think every American should expect us to do, which is make sure that we have elections that are fair," he added.

Blanche, confirmed by the Senate after negotiations with key GOP senators, affirmed that his department would act with integrity and that the president would not ask him to act unlawfully. He also reiterated that a proposed $2 billion “anti-weaponization” fund intended to allow lawsuits against the Justice Department has been abandoned.
