Lions preseason loss highlights defensive standouts and offensive workhorse
Detroit's preseason defeat to Cincinnati featured strong pass-rush numbers from Ahmed Hassanein, solid run-defense grades for cornerbacks Roger McCreary and rookie Keith Abney, and a productive showing by running back Jacob Saylors.
The Detroit Lions fell to the Cincinnati Bengals in a rain-soaked preseason matchup on Thursday night, giving coaches a chance to evaluate players ahead of the regular season. Defensive edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein recorded two sacks, five pressures and a forced fumble on 21 pass-rushing snaps, earning a 16.7 pass-rush productivity score that ranks second among 117 qualifying defenders, according to Pro Football Focus.
Cornerbacks Roger McCreary and rookie Keith Abney received high grades in run defense, posting scores of 82.1 and 81.9 respectively. McCreary’s 12.5% run-stop rate tied for third among 79 qualifying cornerbacks, and he allowed no completions on two coverage targets, while Abney’s early performance could help the Lions shore up depth at the position.
Running back Jacob Saylors was highlighted by head coach Dan Campbell as the most impactful offensive player. Saylors rushed for 55 yards on eight carries (6.9 yards per carry) and added 28 receiving yards on three catches (9.3 yards per reception). Fifty-one of his rushing yards came after contact, giving him a 6.38 yards-after-contact average that ranked second among 23 qualifying running backs.
Defensive back Ennis Rakestraw struggled, surrendering four catches on five targets for 44 yards and receiving a 28.3 coverage grade, the second-worst among 104 qualifying secondary players. He left the game after an injury but will need to improve quickly to retain a roster spot.
Overall, the game offered a mixed view of the Lions’ roster, with promising individual performances offset by areas that require further assessment before the regular season begins.
