Multiple suspects linked to early-morning shooting at Virginia State University, five injured

Summary

A shooting near Virginia State University's Quad Annexes injured five people, including one student, and led to a brief campus lockdown while police search for several suspects.

Police arrested Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, in connection with a shooting that wounded five people near Virginia State University's Quad Annexes shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Four of the victims, aged 17 to 23, were not students; a 20-year-old student was treated and later released from the hospital. Harris faces eight felony charges, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities have not disclosed a motive and have not confirmed whether Harris has legal representation.

University officials said law enforcement does not believe there is an ongoing threat to the campus, and the lockdown imposed after the incident was lifted. The campus remains under a heightened police presence, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Students were advised to monitor email for further safety updates and support resources.

The university, a historically Black institution with about 5,700 students, had recently opened residence halls and was preparing for classes to resume on Monday. In a statement, officials expressed concern for the community and reaffirmed that student safety remains the top priority.

"We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community," the university said.

The investigation continues as police search for additional suspects.
