Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra reviewed: strong specs but eclipsed by smaller Z Fold 8

Resumen

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra offers premium hardware and a refined design, yet sales and user preference favor the more compact Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Samsung’s latest high-end foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, launches at $2,100 for the base 12 GB/256 GB model and climbs to $2,700 for the 16 GB/1 TB version. It is sold through Samsung, carrier partners and major retailers, with color options that include an exclusive Green Shadow from Samsung and Violet Shadow, Cream and Graphite elsewhere. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900, offering a lighter, smaller alternative within the same product line.

The Ultra retains the dimensions, thickness and weight of the previous Z Fold 7, incorporating Samsung’s Flex Titanium display technology that reduces the visible crease and adds an anti-reflective coating. Reviewers note that the hinge operates smoothly and quietly, and both the inner and cover screens deliver bright, high-refresh visuals. However, the larger folded profile feels “awkward” compared with the more manageable Z Fold 8, which many users find easier to hold and use in both closed and open configurations.

Camera hardware on the Ultra includes a 50 MP wide-angle sensor, a 200 MP main sensor and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3× optical zoom. While the wide-angle sensor produces detailed images, the telephoto lens underperforms relative to competitors such as the Motorola Razr Fold. The camera system is described as a modest upgrade over the Z Fold 7 and does not match the capabilities of Samsung’s S-series Ultra models.

Running on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and Android 17 with One UI 9, the device handles multitasking, split-screen and Flex Mode without lag. The lack of stylus support is noted, especially as rival foldables include a stylus. Samsung’s Quick Share now interoperates with Apple’s AirDrop, enabling fast file transfers between Android and iOS devices.

Battery capacity has been increased to 5,000 mAh using silicon-carbon technology, delivering roughly two days of moderate use. The phone supports 45 W wired charging and 20 W wireless charging, though optimal wireless performance requires a specific case. Charging to full capacity takes about 65 minutes with a compatible charger.

Analysts suggest the “Ultra” label may be a marketing move aimed at pre-empting potential Apple foldable naming, rather than indicating a performance tier comparable to Samsung’s S-series Ultra phones. The review concludes that while the Z Fold 8 Ultra is a solid premium device, the smaller Z Fold 8 offers a more comfortable user experience at a lower price point, making it the preferred choice for most consumers.

"The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is refined, well-made, and durable, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is also all these things in a smaller, more manageable package," the reviewer wrote.

Potential buyers are advised to handle both models in person to assess ergonomics before deciding.
