Detroit Lions see several starters return at training camp after preseason injuries
Multiple Detroit Lions players, including D.J. Reed, Juice Scruggs and rookie defensive end Derrick Moore, participated in Saturday's practice, while coach Dan Campbell addressed a few lingering injuries.
Several Detroit Lions players took part in Saturday's training-camp session, marking the first full-practice day after the team's preseason opener. Cornerback D.J. Reed completed the full workload, returning as the No. 1 cornerback in drills after missing time with a groin injury. Center Juice Scruggs, who missed about a week with a soft-tissue issue, rejoined the first-team offense as the starting center, replacing Seth McLaughlin.
Rookie defensive end Derrick Moore was on the field for the first time in nearly two weeks, handling most of the practice and contributing on special teams. Running back D.J. Small, who missed the preseason opener with a suspected knee injury, participated in limited drills as he competes for a roster spot at the RB4 position.
Defensive back D.J. Rodriguez saw extensive work with the second-team defense during nickel packages, though his status on the first-team unit remains unclear. Fourth-round rookie Jimmy Rolder, previously sidelined by a leg injury, worked with a trainer and ran at a moderate pace while wearing a protective sleeve.
Coach Dan Campbell commented on a few injuries: he described defensive back Saylors' ankle injury as not serious and expected a short recovery, and noted that running back Kye Robichaux appears to have a broken foot, adding that the player has been durable throughout camp. Campbell also mentioned that Mekhi Wingo may be undergoing concussion protocol and that further imaging is needed to assess Strickland's condition.
Other players, including Cochran, continued rehabilitation work with trainers to add depth at the tackle position.
