Iranian official rejects Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz could become U.S. territory
Iran’s chief justice said the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian sovereignty after President Trump suggested it might be declared U.S. territory following the conflict with Iran.
President Donald Trump told a speech in New York that, after what he described as a decisive defeat of Iran, he could declare the Strait of Hormuz a United States territory. The comment came amid ongoing hostilities in the region.
Iran’s chief justice, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, responded on the social platform X, stating that the “owner and ruler of the Strait of Hormuz is Islamic Iran.” He dismissed Trump’s remarks as unfounded fabrications.
The exchange highlights heightened rhetoric surrounding the strategic waterway, which is a critical conduit for global oil shipments.
"The nonsense and fabrications of the criminal President of America regarding the Strait of Hormuz stem from the delusions of this featherbrained individual," Mohseni-Eje’i wrote.
U.S. officials have not confirmed any plan to alter the legal status of the strait, and the area remains under international navigation rules.
The remarks occur as other regional incidents, including attacks on vessels linked to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, have been reported in the strait.
