Nationals shift All-Star CJ Abrams to second base

Résumé

The Washington Nationals announced that shortstop CJ Abrams will be moved to second base, a change aimed at improving the team's defense while Abrams remains available to play shortstop occasionally.

Washington will reposition All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams at second base in the coming days, a move the club says is intended to strengthen its defense. Abrams, 25, said he had "no strong reaction" to the decision and emphasized his willingness to play wherever needed, adding, "I play shortstop today, so I’ll be ready to go. That’s where I’ve been. Can take charge of the infield when I can, and play my game."

Manager Blake Butera said Abrams took the news professionally and expressed support for the team, noting, "If this is what’s best for the Nationals, I’m all for it." Butera, along with president of baseball operations Paul Toboni and general manager Ani Kilambi, explained that the timing was chosen to give Abrams a chance to adjust before the offseason and to provide the club with defensive feedback. He added, "There is no perfect time to do this… we think now is probably the best time because… it allows him a chance to get some real feedback before the offseason."

Abrams will still start at shortstop roughly once a week, with Nasim Nuñez shifting from second base to shortstop. The decision follows internal discussions that began earlier in the season and reflects the team's broader strategy for the 2026 and 2027 campaigns.
