Five injured in shooting near Virginia State University campus
A shooting near Virginia State University's Quad Annexes injured five people, including one in critical condition, prompting a temporary lockdown and an ongoing police investigation.
A shooting on Saturday morning near the Quad Annexes of Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, wounded five individuals, one of whom remains in critical condition, according to university officials. The incident triggered an hours-long lockdown that was lifted at 8:21 a.m. local time, though a significant law-enforcement presence continues on campus.
University statements said multiple suspects were involved and that both Virginia State University Police and Chesterfield County Police are investigating. The university urged the campus community to avoid the area and follow police instructions, and asked anyone with information to contact Chesterfield County Police, which is leading the inquiry.
The shooting occurred two days before the start of the fall semester at the historically Black institution, which enrolls about 5,700 students. The incident adds to a broader pattern of gun violence on U.S. college campuses, with the Gun Violence Archive reporting 100 wounded or killed in such incidents in 2025, up from 75 the previous year.
