White Sox beat Tigers 9-5 in series opener
Chicago rallied for a 9-5 win over Detroit, highlighted by two-run and solo home runs from Tristan Peters and Munetaka Murakami, while Miguel Vargas added two homers.
Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-5 in the opening game of a three-game series at Comerica Park. The Sox generated most of their offense in the fourth inning, scoring five runs. Tristan Peters tied the game with a two-run homer, and Munetaka Murakami followed with a solo blast that gave Chicago a 4-3 lead. Miguel Vargas later added two home runs, one in the sixth and another in the eighth, extending the margin.
The White Sox recorded 14 hits, seven of which were for extra bases, and forced Detroit into a series of pitching changes. Starting pitcher Jackson Jobe allowed three runs before being relieved, and Chicago’s bullpen, managed by Will Venable, kept the Tigers from closing the gap. José Urquidy earned the win in his Chicago debut, allowing three runs on five hits over 3.2 innings without issuing a walk.
Detroit’s offense was limited to five runs despite homers by Ben Malgeri and Max Clark. Relievers Huascar Brazobán, Grant Taylor and Bryan Hudson each contributed innings to preserve the lead. The victory gave Chicago a 4-3 edge in the season series and secured the division lead heading into the next two games.
