Congo Ebola Outbreak Accelerates Toward Record Death Toll

सारांश

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has surpassed 4,600 confirmed cases and 2,100 deaths, prompting WHO warnings that it could exceed the 2014-2016 West African epidemic.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to more than 4,600 confirmed cases, with over 2,100 deaths, according to health officials. The World Health Organization said the epidemic is the second largest on record and is spreading faster than any previous outbreak, putting it on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West African crisis.

The outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain, which has a case-fatality rate estimated between 25% and 50%. No approved vaccines or treatments exist for this strain, and diagnostic tests designed for the more common Zaire strain have been ineffective, delaying detection.

Health workers face severe shortages of protective equipment and delayed pay, leading some to protest and abandon their posts. "Without the effort of nurses, doctors, and hygienists, there is nothing," said a nurse at an Ebola treatment center.

Local authorities have restricted passenger numbers on motorcycles, affecting transport operators' incomes, while market vendors in Bunia report significant disruptions to daily life.

The United Nations highlighted that ongoing armed conflict over mineral resources hampers access to medical care, with 60-70% of Ebola deaths occurring in communities because patients reach health facilities too late. UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq called on all parties to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access.

Epidemiologist Dr. Anne Rimoin of UCLA noted that the outbreak emerged amid broader emergencies, including conflict and weak health infrastructure, and emphasized the need for better support for frontline workers, reliable diagnostics, and effective contact tracing to control the spread.
