Bald eagle Shadow observed with new companion after partner Jackie’s death

Résumé

Three days after the death of his longtime mate Jackie, the Big Bear bald eagle known as Shadow was seen at the nest with another eagle identified as KD1.

The nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley released footage on Thursday showing the resident bald eagle, Shadow, perched beside a second eagle at the Big Bear nest. The newcomer, labeled “KD1,” arrived at the nest on Aug. 10, hours after news of Jackie’s death was announced, and has returned several times since.

Friends of Big Bear Valley noted that KD1 appears larger than Shadow, suggesting the bird is likely female, as female bald eagles are typically 25% to 33% larger than males. KD1 hatched in March 2022 in Southern California, making it about 4½ years old.

Jackie, estimated to be around 14 years old, died on Aug. 7 after a prolonged battle with anemia despite intensive care at the Ojai Raptor Center. The center said treatment decisions were based on medical evidence and the bird’s welfare, and that her remains were transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for further analysis.

The Big Bear nest livestream, which has attracted a global audience, previously featured Shadow and Jackie raising several eaglets, including Simba, Spirit, Sunny, Gizmo, Luna and Sandy.
