Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza shows promise but focuses on flaws in preseason debut
Fernando Mendoza completed 10 of 16 passes for a touchdown in the Raiders' 27-14 preseason loss, earning praise from coach Klint Kubiak while the rookie emphasized the need to improve.
Fernando Mendoza threw his first professional touchdown pass in the Raiders' 27-14 preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals, completing 10 of 16 throws for 97 yards. After connecting with Jack Bech on a six-yard score, he led a second drive that reached the red zone before missing a pass to Deven Thompkins.
Head coach Klint Kubiak said of Mendoza, "I see an ascending player. We’ve just got to keep getting better." Quarterback Kirk Cousins added, "He did a great job. He moved the football, he scored points, gave us a chance to score points and operated well."
Despite the touchdown, Mendoza described the outing as a learning experience, stating, "Unfortunately, I let my teammates down today. It’s a growing experience and I need to grow a lot." He highlighted missed reads on a later drive and noted the speed of NFL defenders as a challenge.
Mendoza also praised Cousins' performance, noting the veteran’s timing and anticipation, and recalled a message from minority owner Tom Brady reminding players that the NFL is a different level. Coach Kubiak reaffirmed that Cousins remains the likely starter for Week 1, while the rookie continues to develop under the veteran’s mentorship.
