Showrunner says 'Lanterns' will launch John Stewart into broader DC Universe

Résumé

The HBO series 'Lanterns' will focus on John Stewart succeeding Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, and its creator says the character could appear in other DC projects.

The upcoming HBO series "Lanterns" centers on the transition of the Green Lantern mantle from veteran Hal Jordan to the younger John Stewart, set against a small-town mystery in Nebraska. Showrunner Chris Mundy told the New York Times that the series is designed to establish Stewart as a standalone hero who can later move across the wider DC franchise.

"We’re trying to really put John Stewart on his feet inside our own show, but then, once he’s on his feet, he can walk around in the rest of the DC-verse," Mundy said.

Mundy noted that the creators, including Damon Lindelof and Tom King, received no explicit mandate to tie the series to other DC properties, but they are considering how Stewart might appear elsewhere. No similar comments were made about Hal Jordan’s future in the franchise. The series premieres on Sunday, August 16.
