Dodgers consider reshuffling bullpen as Edwin Díaz struggles
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team may need to explore alternatives after closer Edwin Díaz posted an 11.57 ERA in his first six starts this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Díaz has struggled since returning from elbow surgery, posting an 11.57 earned run average over 5⅔ innings and allowing 12 hits and three walks. In his most recent appearance on Thursday, Díaz entered the game with a two-run lead against the Milwaukee Brewers and surrendered four consecutive hits, resulting in a 5-4 loss at Dodger Stadium.
The right-hander was signed to a three-year, $69 million contract in the offseason to serve as the team's closer. Prior to his injury, he recorded a 10.50 ERA in seven appearances. After Thursday’s outing, manager Dave Roberts said the club needs additional options, noting, "Give me another option ... I can’t just say change him to low-leverage. I have to have options."
Díaz acknowledged the situation, stating, "I just gotta see what they wanna do. I wanna do the best thing for the team. At the end of the day, if they give me the ball in the ninth I will try to do my job. If they give me the ball in another inning, I will try to do my job."
Roberts emphasized that each pitcher must fulfill his role, while the Dodgers continue to evaluate their bullpen composition as the season approaches the postseason.
