Jayden Daniels' representatives file cease-and-desist over LSU's use of No. 5 jersey
Jayden Daniels' camp has sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU, alleging the school violated a promise by allowing quarterback DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey previously associated with Daniels; LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said the number was promised during recruiting.
Jayden Daniels' representatives have filed a cease-and-desist letter with LSU over the football program's decision to let quarterback DJ Pickett wear the No. 5 jersey, a number Daniels wore during his tenure at the school. Daniels' camp described the move as "disrespectful" and said it breached an earlier promise.
Lane Kiffin, LSU's head coach, said the jersey number was promised to Pickett during the recruiting process and that he was honoring that commitment. "That was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here for him to sign here. I’ve done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and people," Kiffin said.
Daniels posted on social media that he remains grateful for his time at LSU and is focused on his upcoming season with the Washington Commanders, adding that he hopes the dispute can be resolved privately.
The disagreement reflects ongoing tensions in college athletics surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights and the use of former players' branding.
