Review of iPhone 17 Pro After One Year Highlights Durability and Battery Performance

Résumé

A year after its release, the iPhone 17 Pro is praised for its scratch-resistant Ceramic Shield 2, improved battery life and cooling system, while some minor issues such as edge chipping and performance dips on beta software are noted.

Apple's iPhone 17 Pro has been in use for nearly twelve months as the company prepares to launch the iPhone 18 Pro series. According to MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera, the device's Ceramic Shield 2 proves more resistant to scratches than its predecessor, with only faint marks after a year of use, compared with noticeable scratches on the iPhone 16 Pro within three weeks. The phone also withstood face-down drops without damage, though minor chips appeared along the aluminum edges. Reports of the orange finish fading over time were not observed in Barbera's unit.

Battery performance is reported as a strong point; the iPhone 17 Pro can sustain a full day of heavy usage, matching the endurance typically seen in larger Pro Max models. Barbera chose the smaller 17 Pro over the 17 Pro Max because its battery lasted longer than that of the 16 Pro.

Apple introduced a vapor-chamber cooling system with the 17 Pro, which kept the device cooler for most of the year. Barbera noted a recent increase in temperature and slight performance dips, which he attributes to running iOS 27 beta software, a factor known to affect battery life and performance.

Industry rumors suggest the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will not represent a major upgrade and may carry higher prices. Analysts advise that purchasing the 17 Pro now could be a sensible option for users of older iPhones rather than waiting for the next generation.
