Preseason Week 1 Highlights Key Player Debuts and Position Battles Across the NFL
The opening week of the 2026 NFL preseason features notable rookie appearances, injuries and position competitions as teams evaluate talent ahead of the regular season.
The first week of the 2026 NFL preseason showcased several high-profile matchups and player evaluations. In the Cardinals-Raiders game, No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza started for the Raiders, while the Cardinals introduced rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, offering a glimpse of Mike LaFleur’s offensive plans. The Lions, dealing with injuries to Cade Mays and Juice Scruggs, turned to backup offensive linemen Seth McLaughlin and first-round pick Blake Miller in their preseason contest against the Bengals.
The Packers faced the Steelers with running back MarShawn Lloyd returning from a series of injuries, potentially earning a larger role as the team’s backfield options remain limited. The Colts used their preseason game against the Patriots to give snaps to Anthony Richardson Sr. and backup Riley Leonard, while also monitoring quarterback Daniel Jones’s recovery. The Patriots evaluated rookie tight end Eli Raridon, noted for his blocking and receiving ability.
In the Chargers-Texans matchup, first-round selection Akheem Mesidor and second-round pick Jake Slaughter were highlighted as potential contributors on defense and the offensive line. The Browns’ preseason game against the Bears featured the ongoing quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, with Watson starting the first half. The Browns also saw promising performances from wide receivers Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion, as well as rookie linemen Spencer Fano, Austin Barber and Parker Brailsford.
Other storylines included the Vikings’ possible debut of quarterback Kyler Murray against the Giants and the Patriots’ assessment of rookie tight end Eli Raridon. Defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary’s approach with the Chargers was noted for a higher blitz rate compared with his predecessor.
"Fernando Mendoza’s skill set should translate nicely to Klint Kubiak’s offense," a team source said.
"Jeremiyah Love can stay on the field for all four downs, which fits the Cardinals’ offensive strategy," a Cardinals spokesperson added.
"The Browns’ offensive line is shaping up to give any young quarterback a solid foundation," a Browns coach commented.
These preseason contests provide early indicators of how teams may adjust rosters and schemes before the regular season begins.
