Detroit will rest many starters against Cincinnati, giving a group of hopefuls a chance to improve their standing on the roster.

Detroit will travel to Cincinnati on Thursday night for the first preseason game of the 2026 campaign, with head coach Dan Campbell indicating that most starters will be rested. The reduced playing time for veterans creates an opportunity for several fringe players to showcase their abilities and vie for roster spots.

Quarterback Luke Altmyer, an undrafted free agent, is expected to receive the bulk of reps after backup Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement, despite the recent signing of veteran Josh Dobbs. Altmyer’s familiarity with the Lions’ pro-style system could position him as a contender for the backup role.

Running back Jacob Saylors, who was a fourth-string option last season, may see significant action as the team’s top three backs are likely to sit and other reserve backs are dealing with injuries. A strong performance could elevate his standing in the crowded backfield.

Wide receiver Tay Martin, highlighted by Campbell for his special-teams contributions, is competing for the final wide-receiver slots on the roster. Success on offense and continued impact on special teams could earn him a place.

Tight end Jackson Meeks, who switched from wide receiver to tight end last season, is in the mix for a fourth-tight-end spot after rookie Miles Kitselman was placed on injured reserve.

Second-year center C Seth McLaughlin has been promoted to the starting lineup in practice after injuries to Cade Mays and Juice Scruggs, and he could compete for a starting role in the regular season.

Defensive lineman Skyler Gill-Howard, a rookie who missed his final college season with injury, has moved up the depth chart and may see early snaps if fellow defensive end Mekhi Wingo remains sidelined.

Edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein, returning from a year-long injury layoff and a position change, hopes to solidify his roster spot with a solid showing.

Linebacker Erick Hunter, a undrafted rookie who has contributed on special teams, could earn a backup linebacker role after veteran Devin White is taken out of the game.

Cornerbacks Ennis Rakestraw and Roger McCreary, both facing competition for limited roster spots, will need strong performances to remain in the Lions’ plans.

"We have a lot of depth at receiver, and anyone can win the remaining spots," Campbell said.

"The competition is very close at running back," he added.

The game will serve as a critical evaluation period for these players as the Lions finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the regular season.
