Illinois resident wins $1 billion Powerball jackpot

Resumen

A ticket bought in Quincy, Illinois, matched the numbers in Wednesday's Powerball draw, awarding the winner a $1.04 billion annuity or a $450.5 million cash option. Two Michigan tickets each earned $50,000 in the same drawing.

A Powerball ticket purchased at a Hy-Vee gas station in Quincy, Illinois, matched the winning numbers in Wednesday's draw, securing a prize estimated at $1.04 billion if taken as an annuity or $450.5 million as a lump-sum cash payment before taxes. The draw, which featured the numbers 4, 26, 66, 67, 69 and Powerball 9, also carried a 2× Power Play multiplier.

Lottery officials said the jackpot was the largest Powerball prize awarded this year and the eighth-largest in the game’s history, following months of rollovers that pushed the amount to record levels. The drawing marked the first time players from the United Kingdom participated since ticket sales began there on July 21.

In addition to the grand prize, more than three million tickets won cash prizes by matching at least one number. Four tickets in Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina each matched all five white balls, earning the standard $1 million Match 5 prize; a fifth ticket in Massachusetts also matched the white balls and, with the Power Play option, doubled its payout to $2 million. Michigan Lottery officials reported two tickets sold in the state that each won $50,000.

The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, at approximately 10:59 p.m. ET, with the new jackpot expected to start at about $20 million.
