Massachusetts teen charged with murdering mother and brother after using AI for violent fantasies
A 17-year-old from Acton, Massachusetts, has been charged with two counts of murder after police say he used ChatGPT to search for fictional scenarios about killing his family.
A suburban Boston teenager has been charged with murdering his mother, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, according to Middlesex County prosecutors. Arjun Aravind, 17, of Acton, allegedly used the artificial-intelligence tool ChatGPT to look for “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories” about killing his family, prosecutors said.
The father discovered the bodies after returning home and finding that a tutor who had arrived earlier could not make contact with anyone inside. Police located the victims, with the brother’s body found on the first floor and the mother’s in the basement.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan told reporters that the investigation showed Arjun had been creating “gothic-novel-style” fantasy narratives using ChatGPT, asking hypothetical questions about violent scenarios involving his family.
After the murders, the teen’s car, a 2014 green Honda Accord, was missing from the residence. An alarm triggered at a parking lot in Wayland about 13 miles away, and officers identified the vehicle’s license plate. Arjun was arrested without incident.
In addition to two murder counts, he faces charges of assault and battery on a household member, assault and battery, unauthorized use of a vehicle and motor-vehicle theft. Local police noted the family had been known to authorities after the teen was reported missing in a prior runaway incident, but no threats had been recorded at that time.
The teen’s legal representation has not been confirmed.
