Britain and France Face Fifth Heat Wave with Temperatures Near Record Levels

Resumen

Forecasters warn that central and southeast England could reach 38 °C, while parts of France may see up to 40 °C, as both countries confront drought, water restrictions and wildfire risks.

Large areas of western Europe are experiencing a fifth heat wave this summer, with temperatures expected to approach record highs. The UK Met Office forecasts that central and southeast England could see temperatures as high as 38 °C (100 °F), matching the peak recorded on June 26. In France, forecasts predict up to 40 °C (104 °F) in central and southern regions and 38 °C in Paris.

The heat is straining public services. The Royal College of Nursing reported that nurses have collapsed from heat exhaustion in hospitals, highlighting challenges in workplaces lacking adequate cooling. Nicola Ranger, the college’s chief executive, said the incidents demonstrate a failure to protect staff.

Both nations are also dealing with drought conditions that have reduced river flows and stressed water supplies. Southern Water in England has applied for a drought order that would restrict non-essential water use, such as car washing and filling non-domestic pools, pending a decision by Environment Secretary Angela Eagle.

Wildfire risk remains high. England and Wales have recorded 1,017 wildfires so far this year, matching last year’s record total, prompting fire crews to combat a blaze in the New Forest. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he is considering a ban on disposable barbecues to reduce fire danger, stating, “I do believe we need to get the message out loud and clear. People should not be using those barbecues outside at this moment in time.”

In France, firefighters are confronting multiple fires, including incidents in Pas-de-Calais and Brittany, and have warned of possible strike action over staffing and resources. A large fire near Bordeaux last month displaced about a quarter-million residents.
