Wisconsin Primary Upset, White House Press Secretary Resigns, Paramount Threatens Relocation

A moderate candidate won Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary despite large poll leads for his opponent, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced her departure, and Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison warned he may move the studio out of California amid an antitrust dispute.

David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive who re-entered the race after withdrawing in early July, secured the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor by a margin of less than one percentage point over Francesca Hong. Hong had led most pre-election surveys by about 20 points, a discrepancy analysts attribute to a high number of undecided voters and lower voter engagement typical of primary contests.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she will leave her post at the end of the month to devote more time to her young children. Leavitt, who has served since the start of the administration's second term, posted on social media that she felt she could not balance the role with her family responsibilities.

Paramount Skydance chief executive David Ellison indicated he may relocate the studio from California beginning on Oct. 1 unless the state Attorney General opens settlement talks over an antitrust lawsuit challenging Ellison’s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. California officials have accused Ellison of using the threat to pressure a resolution, while industry observers warn that moving the studio would be complex and disruptive.

"We felt in my heart that I couldn’t balance the demands of the press secretary job with being the best mom my two young children deserve," Leavitt wrote on X.

"If California Attorney General Rob Bonta does not open settlement talks, we will begin moving the company on Oct. 1," a source close to Ellison said.

The three developments highlight ongoing uncertainties in political forecasting, staffing at the White House, and major corporate negotiations in the entertainment sector.
