Falcons quarterback Michael Penix updates on ACL recovery as Tua Tagovailoa starts preseason

Résumé

Michael Penix said he is progressing in his rehab after ACL surgery but remains cleared only for limited activities, while Tua Tagovailoa will start the Falcons' first preseason game.

The Atlanta Falcons said quarterback Michael Penix is still not cleared for full team work as he continues rehabilitation after ACL surgery performed on Nov. 25. Penix, who posted a video update on Wednesday, said he feels good and is improving each day, but he is avoiding contact to protect his knee.

"I can do just about anything but take a hit, and that’s what we’re trying to stay away from right now," Penix said. He explained that mental confidence is a key part of his recovery, noting that his doctor described the repaired ligament as strong and unlikely to cause future problems. Penix said he must trust that assessment and overcome lingering doubts about re-injury. The 26-year-old, a first-round pick in 2024, has started 12 games for Atlanta, compiling 2,757 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Meanwhile, the team confirmed that Tua Tagovailoa will start the first preseason contest, though he has not yet been named the regular-season starter.
