Salmonella outbreak linked to Taylor Farms jalapeños prompts nationwide recall

Summary

A multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to Taylor Farms jalapeños has sickened 345 people, leading the FDA to expand recalls across major retailers including Trader Joe's, Walmart and Target.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded a recall of jalapeño products after a Salmonella outbreak associated with Taylor Farms contaminated produce sickened 345 people and caused 36 hospitalizations. The jalapeños, grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to retailers in 27 states. The recall covers a wide range of items sold at Hannaford, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Whole Foods and other stores, including diced jalapeños, salsa, guacamole, dips and ready-to-eat meals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service also issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products that may contain the contaminated jalapeños.

The outbreak, which began in mid-June, prompted restaurant chains such as Chipotle and Qdoba to remove the affected jalapeños from their menus. The FDA advises consumers, restaurants and retailers not to eat, sell or serve the recalled items and to discard any product that may be contaminated. Individuals who experience symptoms of salmonellosis, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, should seek medical attention.

Taylor Fresh Foods said it has stopped sourcing jalapeños from the implicated farmer and will obtain supplies from alternative growers.
