Google unveils Pixel Watch 5 with upgraded hardware and new AI-driven features
Google's Pixel Watch 5 retains the design of its predecessor but adds a faster processor, more RAM and storage, and a suite of AI-powered software updates, including an expanded At a Glance interface and health monitoring tools.
Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google 2026 event. The smartwatch keeps the same domed Actua 360 AMOLED display and 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 as the previous model, with a 320 PPI screen capable of up to 3,000 nits brightness. Battery capacity has been increased by 7-10 mAh, though Google maintains its estimate of 30 hours of use on the 41 mm case and 40 hours on the 45 mm case.
The device now runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, offering a 12% CPU boost and expanding RAM from 2 GB to 3 GB. Storage has been doubled to 64 GB, and a dual-chip architecture with an M55 co-processor is said to make the watch about 20% faster, improving app launch and scrolling performance. A second-generation Active Band made from hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber is also included.
Software updates focus on Google’s Gemini AI. Proactive Suggestions, formerly Magic Cue, provide one-tap replies in Messages, while on-device smart replies now present three options and appear 50% faster. The new At a Glance surface at the bottom of the watch face displays real-time information such as timers, alarms, workouts, flight details and navigation updates, and can be expanded or dismissed with one-hand gestures.
Gemini on Wear OS adds Neural Expressive and Personal Intelligence integration, allowing the watch to answer queries using Gmail, Calendar, Keep and other apps, and to reference prior chat history. Offline Gemini commands enable basic tasks without a phone or internet connection.
Health features receive several upgrades. Dual-frequency GPS and algorithmic adjustments improve route tracking accuracy, and Google claims the watch now outperforms competing models in challenging environments. The Workout Builder adds step-by-step guidance, rest timers and weight/rep tracking, while a new Key Metrics view will offer post-workout analysis.
Google introduced Health Guardian, a suite that includes irregular rhythm detection and new capabilities such as Breathing Emergency Detection, which can alert emergency services to severe drops in oxygen saturation. Upcoming features will monitor blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends and provide a more precise sleep-breathing quality metric.
The Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399 for the 41 mm version and $429 for the 45 mm version, with LTE adding $100. It is available in multiple case and band combinations through Google’s store and other retailers.
