Timber Fire expands to 3,150 acres in Monterey County, Highway 1 remains closed

Summary

The Timber Fire in Monterey County burned 3,150 acres and is 5% contained, prompting evacuation orders for several zones and a 10-mile closure of Highway 1.

The Timber Fire in Monterey County grew to 3,150 acres as of Wednesday morning and remains only 5% contained, according to CAL FIRE. Flames continued to burn overnight at elevations above the fog line, prompting firefighters to focus on protecting homes and preventing the blaze from crossing Highway 1.

Fire activity surged early Wednesday near Partington Ridge and Coast Ridge Road. The U.S. Forest Service said crews built containment lines toward Highway 1, mopped up hot spots, and conducted tactical patrols around structures. Bulldozers cut lines along ridgelines on the northern flank, while hotshot crews worked in steep, heavily vegetated terrain on the western side.

CAL FIRE listed 503 structures as threatened but reported no damage or injuries. More than 900 personnel, including 36 engines, 26 hand crews, seven dozers, six helicopters, six water tenders and additional air tankers, are assigned to the incident.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for zones MRY-F023, MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and MRY-F028-A, with warnings for adjacent zones. Residents are urged to follow official instructions and prepare evacuation kits.

Highway 1 remains closed for roughly 10 miles through the Big Sur area, with the California Highway Patrol advising drivers to avoid the corridor and follow emergency directions.

Weather forecasts indicate a 15%-20% chance of thunderstorms that could bring erratic winds, potentially complicating suppression efforts. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A temporary evacuation shelter and resource center has been established at Carmel Middle School, staffed by the American Red Cross and Monterey County officials, with assistance for pets provided by the local SPCA. Hotels in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties are offering discounted rates for displaced residents.
