Rescue of Infant Captured in Video After Colombia Earthquake

Summary

A video shows rescuers pulling a baby from the rubble of a collapsed building in Cali following a magnitude-7 earthquake that killed at least 181 people.

A video posted on social media on Monday night shows rescuers in Cali pulling a baby from the debris of a collapsed building after a magnitude-7 earthquake struck Colombia. The footage, uploaded by Brian Osorio Zuluaga, captures a survivor trapped under concrete telling rescuers, "I'm with a baby," before workers remove the infant and call for medical assistance. The rescuers then continue to free the adult who had been holding the child.

The condition of the baby and the adult was not immediately confirmed. Search teams and volunteers are still combing through the rubble, where officials estimate thousands remain missing.

President Abelardo de la Espriella, who had been in office for only a few days, reported at least 181 deaths and 2,595 injuries, with civilian databases suggesting nearly 4,000 people are still unaccounted for. The United States has pledged more than $15 million in aid, while Mexico and El Salvador have announced the deployment of health workers, supplies, and cargo planes to assist the relief effort.

"Our prayers are with the families of the victims, the wounded and all the Colombian people," Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele wrote on X.
