Leaks suggest the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will add a variable aperture main lens, a wider-aperture telephoto lens and new professional-oriented camera software features.
Apple is slated to launch the iPhone 18 Pro in the coming weeks, and multiple reports indicate significant enhancements to its camera system. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said the device will feature what he described as the most substantial camera hardware upgrade in recent years.
According to the rumors, the phone will incorporate a variable-aperture main camera, a change that could allow users to adjust focus and depth of field, improve low-light performance and expand portrait-mode capabilities. The telephoto lens is also expected to receive a larger aperture, which should boost its effectiveness in dim environments.
In addition to hardware changes, industry sources cited by The Information suggest Apple will introduce professional-grade software tools that go beyond the current basic controls in the native camera app. The update may include new Pro-exclusive features and a redesigned Camera Control button.
"The camera in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models will begin to match professional-grade cameras in terms of certain advanced features," the source said.
