Kyler Murray named Vikings starter over J.J. McCarthy
The Minnesota Vikings announced Kyler Murray will be the starting quarterback, relegating recent first-round pick J.J. McCarthy to a backup role as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
The Minnesota Vikings confirmed that veteran quarterback Kyler Murray will start the season, ending the competition with rookie J.J. McCarthy. Murray, who recovered from a foot injury that limited his play with the Arizona Cardinals, impressed coaches during spring practices and earned the starting nod from head coach Kevin O'Connell on Tuesday.
Murray, the 2019 No. 1 overall pick, received roughly half the repetitions of a typical starter during minicamp and faced challenges adapting to the Vikings' offense. Nevertheless, O'Connell said the decision was made after nine to ten practices to give the quarterback and the offense ample time to develop before the regular season begins.
"The goal was to create a competitive environment filled with wildly capable players that could elevate our quarterback room and our team," O'Connell said.
While Murray showed moments of strong arm talent and the ability to extend plays with his speed, he also threw two interceptions during a recent full-pads practice and displayed occasional inaccuracies as he continues to learn the system. The coaching staff believes he offers a higher ceiling for the offense than McCarthy, who will serve as the backup.
McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in the 2024 draft, finished his rookie season ranked seventh in QBR but did not make sufficient progress to overtake Murray in camp. O'Connell indicated that McCarthy still has a future with the organization, though his immediate role will be limited unless Murray becomes unavailable.
The Vikings also re-signed former starter Carson Wentz as the third-string quarterback, adding depth to the position. Murray's contract is structured without a franchise tag for 2027, allowing him to become a free agent after the 2026 season if he performs well.
The decision comes as the Vikings prepare for opening games against the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, and it could impact the production of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who may benefit from a full season with Murray at quarterback.
