Total solar eclipse of Aug. 12, 2026 will cross Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain

Resumen

The sole total solar eclipse of 2026 will be visible from parts of Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain on Aug. 12, while a partial eclipse will be seen across much of Europe and parts of North America.

A total solar eclipse will occur on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, with the path of totality passing over northern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. The event will provide roughly two minutes of total darkness for observers within the narrow track, while a broader partial eclipse will be visible to an estimated 230 million people across Europe and parts of North America.

In Europe, major cities such as Madrid, London and Paris are expected to experience up to 90% coverage, with London reaching a maximum of 91% at 2:13 p.m. Eastern time (7:13 p.m. local). In Spain, Valencia will see totality at 8:32 p.m. local time, the first total eclipse there since 1905.

In North America, the greatest partial coverage will occur in Fairbanks, Alaska (37% at 8:27 a.m. local), while Boston, New York City, Toronto and Philadelphia will see between 7% and 16% coverage during the afternoon hours.

The eclipse will begin in extreme northern Russia at 17:00 UTC (1 p.m. ET) and finish its totality track by 2:45 p.m. ET. Observers in the totality zone should use certified solar eclipse glasses, removing them only during the brief period of totality to avoid eye damage.

The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States is not expected until 2044, with later events scheduled for 2052 and 2079 for other regions of the country.
