Defendant in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder appears at Manhattan pre-trial hearing

Résumé

Luigi Mangione, charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, attended a pre-trial conference in Manhattan as the September trial approaches, while disputes over media access continue.

Luigi Mangione, the 28-year-old suspect in the December 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare chief Brian Thompson, was brought before a Manhattan state court on Tuesday for a pre-trial conference. He entered the courtroom at 9:46 a.m. wearing a slate-colored suit and white shirt. The hearing took place less than a month before the scheduled trial set for 8 September, and Mangione also faces a separate federal proceeding on stalking charges linked to the killing.

The courtroom was nearly full, with about two dozen supporters present, some wearing bright green wrist bands and a woman in a black T-shirt that read “OPEN THE COURTROOM,” referencing a dispute over an overflow room and video feed. The case has drawn international attention, reviving debate over the U.S. for-profit healthcare model and elevating Mangione to a folk-hero status among certain online communities.

Judge Gregory Carro responded to concerns about crowding by announcing the creation of an overflow room to accommodate additional public and press seating, a change from the original media-access plan. Prior to the conference, both defense attorneys and prosecutors exchanged accusations regarding the media-seating arrangement. The defense alleged, without providing evidence, that court officials and prosecutors had devised a media plan without consulting the defense, a claim that media reports quickly refuted. Prosecutors stated they had no role in determining reporter placement or the lack of an overflow room. The defense later filed a clarification letter and continues to seek a hearing on the media-access issue.
