Mississippi authorities investigate hanging death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune

Resumen

Police are conducting an investigation into the hanging death of Tasia Fortune, whose body was found near an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi, while an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death.

Police in Jackson, Mississippi, responded to an abandoned house on Aug. 3 and discovered the body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune hanging in the backyard. The Hinds County chief medical examiner confirmed her identity, and the body has been transferred to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to establish the cause and manner of death.

Fortune, a mother of four who had lived in the state for more than a decade, was last seen by her mother on July 26 after traveling to Kentucky for a family reunion. Her mother, Christy Spivey, told ABC News that Fortune was not acting out of the ordinary and expressed belief that her daughter did not take her own life.

Jackson police have not named any suspects or persons of interest. Local reports indicate a man who was arrested on an unrelated firearms charge told investigators he had argued with Fortune but denied involvement in her death.

Fortune's death follows two other hanging incidents in Mississippi within the past year: the suicide of 21-year-old Delta State University student Trey Reed in Cleveland and the death of Cory Zukatis, an unhoused man in Vicksburg, which was also ruled a suicide.

Community leaders have called for a transparent and thorough investigation. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes wrote to U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger requesting assistance, referring to Fortune as a murder victim. Bernice King, daughter of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., urged caution against premature conclusions while emphasizing the need for clarity given the state's history.

An ongoing memorial featuring flowers, photographs and personal items has been set up near the site, reflecting the community’s grief as authorities continue their inquiry.
