Jackie, the bald eagle that gained national attention for raising eaglets in Big Bear, died early Monday following three weeks of treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center.

Jackie, a bald eagle that became widely known after a livestream showed her raising eaglets with partner Shadow near Big Bear Lake, died in the early hours of Monday. The Ojai Raptor Center, which cared for her for the last three weeks, said her condition continued to worsen despite intensive treatment, including oxygen therapy, supportive care and a blood transfusion.

"Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists," the center said.

Jackie had been transferred to the center on July 17 after rescue teams responded to a report that she was injured in a fight with two subadult eagles and appeared very ill. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will now handle her remains.

The bird was estimated to be about 14 years old and had successfully raised several fledglings, including Simba, Spirit, Sunny, Gizmo, Luna and Sandy, whose names were chosen by local elementary school students. The Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates the livestream, asked the public to treat the raptor center staff kindly following the news.
