Garry says he respects Makhachev as the benchmark before UFC 330 title fight

Resumen

Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry said he views Islam Makhachev as the top opponent he wants to defeat for a UFC championship, while both fighters prepare for their UFC 330 showdown.

Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry said he regards Islam Makhachev as the benchmark opponent he wants to defeat to become UFC champion ahead of their UFC 330 main event. Garry, who entered the promotion with a 10-1 record, explained that he deliberately places Makhachev on a "pedestal" because he believes the Russian fighter is the best pound-for-pound competitor in the sport.

"I put him on a pedestal as the best fighter walking the planet right now until proven otherwise. Because that’s the person I want to beat to become champion of the world," Garry told MMA Fighting via Betvictor Casino.

Makhachev, who has not publicly criticized Garry, predicted the bout would likely end before the third round. He is known for finishing fights and for strong grappling. Garry acknowledged Makhachev's confidence, noting the Russian fighter is prepared for a full five-round contest.

"I think Islam is more than prepared for 25 minutes of violence. He is a man who is dangerous in every round. He should feel confident," Garry said.

Garry added that the fight will test both athletes and that he has his own strategy for the encounter on Aug. 16.

The Irish fighter earned his title shot after a steady rise through the division, including a rebound win over former champion Belal Muhammad following his sole career loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in 2024. Garry described the upcoming fight as the fulfillment of his long-term goal of becoming UFC champion.

"It’s a destiny fulfilled. No other focus, no other drive, no other goals. I want to be champion of the world," he said.
