Bears practice moved indoors as rain forces cancellations; Hyppolite draws praise, injuries reported
Inclement weather sent the Chicago Bears training camp inside the Walter Payton Center, prompting fan cancellations. Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite received notable commendations, while a rookie suffered a knee injury.
Rain forced the Chicago Bears to hold today’s training-camp session inside the Walter Payton Center, leading to the second fan-cancellation of the season. The Bears reminded traveling supporters to have alternate plans in case of weather-related disruptions.
Second-year linebacker Ruben Hyppolite was highlighted by several beat reporters for his performance, with one noting he "made a few really nice plays, including getting into the backfield" and another calling it his "best practice of camp". However, another observer pointed out that Hyppolite "struggled covering Cole Kmet on routes."
Offensive drills were described as mixed. Quarterback Tyson Bagent connected with Kaden Davis for a long touchdown, and a 61-yard pass from Caleb Williams to Jahdae Walker was followed by a 60-yard strike from Case Keenum to Davis, both featuring significant yards after catch. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, returning from injury, recorded an interception in a drill.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who was absent for the Hall of Fame induction of Drew Brees, had his blitz schemes noted for creating difficulties for the offense, according to CHGO’s Adam Jahns. In his stead, Al Harris led the defensive unit during practice.
Running back D’Andre Swift was praised for strong play during a situational four-minute offense, while safety Xavier Woods, a recent signee, started alongside rookie Dillon Thieneman and recorded a pick on a Caleb Williams pass.
The practice also saw several absences: wide receiver Luther Burden III, corners Jaylon Jones and Terell Smith, left tackle Braxton Jones, linebacker D’Marco Jackson, defensive end Montez Sweat, and linebacker T.J. Edwards, who is still ramping up after his return. Rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas left the session with a knee injury and did not return. Additional roster moves included the signing of another defensive back.
Overall, the Bears’ indoor session featured a blend of productive offensive bursts and defensive adjustments amid weather-induced logistical changes.
