Bug Fire 20% Contained, Some Evacuation Orders Lifted in Nevada
The Bug Fire, which has burned more than 6,500 acres near the Nevada-California border, is now 20% contained, allowing residents of several Cold Springs neighborhoods to return home while some road closures remain.
Crews from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District reported that the Bug Fire, which has scorched roughly 6,529 acres since Saturday, is now 20% contained. All neighborhoods in Cold Springs that were evacuated from White Lake and Village Parkway have been cleared for re-entry, and the previously closed northbound off-ramps on U.S. 395 have reopened.
"No structures have been damaged," the district said, adding that firefighters continued ground and aerial operations through the night to protect property.
Power outages affect about two thousand customers in the north valleys, with NV Energy estimating service restoration by 8 p.m. after shutting off equipment near the fire. Road closures persist on Red Rock Road between Moya Boulevard and American Flat Road and on Lemmon Drive at Ramsey Way, expected to remain in place through Monday.
Evacuation centers remain operational, including the Evelyn Mount Community Center for people and a trailer for small animals, and the Reno Livestock Event Center for large animals. Evacuation warnings have also been issued for zones in Lassen and Sierra counties.
Local hotels are offering discounted rates to evacuees and fire crews, with Grand Sierra Resort advertising a $59 nightly rate and Peppermill Reno providing special rates through August 12, both waiving resort fees for eligible guests.
