Helicopter crash kills two firefighters during Utah wildfire suppression

Resumen

A Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane operating over the Widemouth 2 fire near Richfield, Utah, crashed, killing the pilot and a crew member, while the blaze remains 24% contained.

A firefighting helicopter crashed near Richfield, Utah, on Friday, killing the pilot and a crew member. The Sikorsky S-64 "Skycrane" was operated by Helicopter Transport Services under a contract with the U.S. Forest Service and was fighting the Widemouth 2 wildfire in the Three Creeks Reservoir area. The National Interagency Fire Center confirmed the two crew members were "fatally injured" and expressed condolences to their families. Recovery teams reached the wreckage on Saturday after extreme fire conditions and steep terrain delayed access.

Deputy incident commander Tyler Hecht said crews took a "tactical pause" to regroup after the crash before resuming firefighting operations, adding that the incident would not alter the overall strategy. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described wildland firefighting as "among the most dangerous jobs in the world" and asked residents to keep the crew in their thoughts. The Utah Highway Patrol organized a procession to escort the remains of the fallen crew members.

The Widemouth 2 fire, sparked by a lightning strike on July 27 in Fishlake National Forest, has burned more than 111,000 acres and is projected to become the state's largest wildfire of the year. Officials reported containment at 24 percent, with ongoing extreme fire behavior such as crowning and long-range spotting threatening nearby communities.
