Lancaster County Reports 16 New Measles Cases, Total Reaches 132 This Year

सारांश

Lancaster County added 16 measles cases since Wednesday, bringing the statewide leading total to 132, while local pharmacies expand vaccine access and tourism officials monitor the impact.

Lancaster County health officials reported 16 additional measles cases to the state department on Thursday, raising the county's cumulative total for 2024 to 132 and keeping it ahead of other Pennsylvania jurisdictions.

The surge has prompted local pharmacies to broaden vaccine availability. Giant Pharmacy locations now administer measles shots without a prescription and have introduced online appointment scheduling. Pharmacist Meghan Dixon said a single Ephrata store administered 16 vaccinations in one day, a volume higher than typical weekly numbers. > "The people we're vaccinating the most are older adults," Dixon noted, adding that measles can lead to complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, especially in children.

Visitors to the area are becoming more cautious. Kelly Irvine, a tourist from Long Island, said she was unaware of the outbreak before arriving and now wants more information, though she does not plan to change her travel itinerary.

The Lancaster County Tourism Alliance is watching the situation closely. President Chad Coble said no major cancellations have been reported yet and highlighted the industry's resilience, noting that experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic have prepared the sector for health-related disruptions.

Health officials continue to advise residents and visitors to watch for fever, rash, cough or runny nose and to seek vaccination if unprotected.
