Chiefs training camp sees heated moments after six consecutive practice days
Kansas City held its tenth practice, the second in full pads, after a six-day stretch of daily sessions, with a few on-field scuffles and updates on player injuries and special-teams roles.
Kansas City Chiefs players completed their tenth training-camp practice on Saturday, the second session conducted in full pads and the final day of a six-day run of daily drills. The team will have a rest day on Sunday before resuming practice at Missouri Western State University on Monday.
Injury updates were minimal; linebacker Jeffrey Bassa returned from a groin issue, and rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who had a shin bruise, participated more fully in his second day back.
The long week of practice led to a few heated exchanges. During a full-team drill, left guard Kingsley Suamataia swung at defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, prompting Anudike-Uzomah to confront him before defensive line coach Joe Cullen intervened. Later, running back Kenneth Walker and safety Alohi Gilman had a physical confrontation after a sideline run, marking the second instance this preseason of Walker throwing a ball at a defender.
"How about that 16-play long drive?" special-teams coordinator Dave Toub told local media, adding, "That’s how you know it’s hot. That happens. It’s football sometimes."
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the intense competition was beneficial, noting, "Six straight days of just going against the same guys… a little scuffles here and there but nothing crazy. As long as we keep it like that and keep competing, that’s when you get the best football team you can get."
Toub identified four players as the primary return specialists: running back Brashard Smith, wide receivers Nikko Remigio, Cyrus Allen and Jacob De Jesus. He highlighted Smith’s improved punt-return technique and praised the others for their progress.
Defensive back Kevin Knowles, an undrafted second-year player who contributed on punt coverage last season, was described as an "established" gunner who must prove himself on defense to retain his role.
The Chiefs will reconvene on Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. for another padded practice.
