The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled that the accidental death of 29-year-old forward Brandon Clarke was caused by the combined effects of heroin, cocaine and multiple prescription medications.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined that the death of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke on 11 May 2026 was accidental and resulted from the combined effects of heroin and cocaine. The report also identified the use of multiple prescription medications as a significant contributing factor, though the specific drugs were not disclosed. Clarke, a 29-year-old Canada-born dual citizen, was found unresponsive in a San Fernando Valley residence and was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Clarke, a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA draft, had appeared in only two games during the 2025-26 season because of injuries. Over his career he played 309 NBA games, starting 50, and averaged 10.2 points per game. He had previously been arrested in Arkansas on charges that included speeding and possession of a controlled substance.

"The medical examiner's office will release the full report at a later date," the department said.

The Grizzlies organization expressed sympathy for Clarke's family and teammates, noting his contributions to the team and the Memphis community.
