Vikings quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray split reps in Day 8 practice
Both quarterbacks completed most of their passes in an 11-on-11 drill, with Murray taking slightly more snaps with the first-team offense, while McCarthy logged more under-center attempts.
In the eighth day of training camp, the Minnesota Vikings rotated quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray through comparable drills. McCarthy started the 11-on-11 session, completing one of two throws before a wide receiver dropped the ball. He later threw a second pass to the same receiver. Murray followed, completing both of his attempts in the same drill.
Each quarterback took eight snaps in the period; Murray’s were consecutive, while McCarthy’s were split into two sets of four. Overall, Murray logged 23 snaps (18 in 11-on-11 and five in 7-on-7) and has taken 169 snaps in camp, whereas McCarthy recorded 22 snaps (18 in 11-on-11 and four in 7-on-7) and has taken 158 snaps total.
Murray’s unofficial passing numbers for the day were 8-for-10, including a perfect 5-for-5 in the 11-on-11 drill. His camp-wide stats stand at 73-for-110. McCarthy posted 12-for-14 for the session, with an 8-for-10 showing in 11-on-11, and his overall camp figures are 70-for-103.
The veteran quarterback worked primarily out of shotgun, taking 11 of his 18 team-drill snaps from that formation, while McCarthy operated under center for 14 of his 18 snaps. Murray saw more action with the first-team offense, recording 17 snaps (including 7-on-7 work) and six with the second team. McCarthy logged 10 first-team and 12 second-team snaps.
During a first-team drill, Murray avoided a sack thanks to a red jersey and had a pass intercepted by Byron Murphy Jr. in a 7-on-7 scenario. He also completed a couple of passes to Tai Felton, though no standout moments were reported.
