Giants wrap up West Virginia camp with strong defensive showing and a late-game touchdown

Summary

New York Giants concluded their second week of training camp in West Virginia, highlighting improved run defense, a productive passing unit and a last-minute touchdown after players urged coach John Harbaugh to extend the drill.

New York Giants finished the second week of their West Virginia training camp on Monday, emphasizing a solid run defense and a passing attack that found rhythm despite earlier struggles in the ground game. The team practiced from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before heading back to East Rutherford for a brief break.

Edge defender Abdul Carter stood out, recording a sack and a pressure on Friday’s drill, while the defensive front collectively limited the offense’s ability to establish running lanes, a notable improvement over recent seasons. Rookie linebacker Arvell Reese attributed the success to the unit’s desire to stop the run.

The passing game showed consistency, with quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston completing the majority of their throws. > "He did. I mean, and he made some good throws. He got us in some good plays," coach John Harbaugh said of Dart’s performance under pressure. Receivers Isaiah Likely, Dalen Cambre, Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin also contributed, with Cambre making a highlight catch and Austin displaying quickness in one-on-one drills.

Placekickers Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada each made six of seven field-goal attempts, hitting distances ranging from 48 to 55 yards. On the downside, third-string quarterback Brandon Allen threw six incompletions and was intercepted, while undrafted right tackle Ryan Schernecke was removed from the lineup after a false-start penalty.

The practice concluded with an extended full-field drill that reached the 3-yard line. Players pushed for an additional play, prompting Harbaugh to relent. The offense capitalized, with Dart connecting with Darius Slayton for a touchdown on a rub route. > "We wanted it, because Harbs was trying to save us," rookie guard Sisi Mauigoa said, describing the team's determination.

The Giants will have Sunday off before resuming drills at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Monday.
