Patriots hold intra-squad scrimmage as injuries and absences affect lineup

Résumé

In the second annual Blue-White scrimmage, the Patriots' blue team defeated the white team 23-17, while injuries to Hunter Henry and others prompted roster adjustments ahead of the upcoming joint practice with the Colts.

The New England Patriots completed their twelfth practice of the preseason with a Blue-White intra-squad scrimmage at Foxborough. The blue team, led by quarterback Tommy DeVito, beat the white team, coached by Drake Maye, 23-17.

DeVito completed 12 of 14 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, while rookie wide receiver DeMario Douglas caught all six of his targets for 111 yards and two scores. The white side’s Maye threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 18 attempts.

The practice saw several players leave early. Veteran tight end Hunter Henry exited after a single catch, citing a leg issue, and did not return. Offensive tackle Marcus Bryant appeared ill before walking off with trainers, and left tackle Will Campbell left with a left-arm injury but is expected back on Monday, according to head coach Bill Belichick. Wide receiver Romeo Doubs missed the session after missing two prior practices for a personal matter.

Coach Belichick described the scrimmage as the second annual event, noting that the coaching staff was split between the two teams and a draft was held to allocate players. He added that the exercise provides players with competitive reps and helps evaluate them in game-like situations.

Defensive statistics included four sacks recorded by Gainer, Taylor, Durden and Holmes. The Patriots will have two off-days and a light practice on Monday before the joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts.
