George Lombard Jr. became the 14th Yankee to homer in his major-league debut and was promoted after leading the organization’s minor-league players in several offensive categories.

George Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ top prospect, made his major-league debut this week and hit a home run in his second plate appearance, becoming the 14th player in franchise history to homer in his first game. The 21-year-old, son of former MLB outfielder and Tigers bench coach George Lombard, had been promoted after leading all qualified Yankees minor-leaguers in on-base percentage (.411) and doubles (24), and ranking near the top in OPS (.909) and walks (60).

Yankees captain Aaron Judge praised Lombard’s tools and demeanor, saying he “has it all” and that it was “incredible” to see him fulfill his dream. Manager Aaron Boone described Lombard’s defensive work as “plug and play,” noting the ease of his throws and his athleticism. General manager Brian Cashman said the organization had reached a point where the data supported giving Lombard an opportunity at the major-league level.

Lombard, who previously excelled in high-school soccer, said he focuses on run prevention and helping pitchers, adding that the support from teammates helped him feel comfortable during his debut. The Yankees indicated that while other clubs, including the Tigers, expressed interest in Lombard before the trade deadline, they considered his value too high to include in a deal for ace pitcher Tarik Skubal.
