Cambridge sociologist Jason Arday resigns amid plagiarism accusations

Jason Arday, Cambridge University's youngest Black professor, stepped down after allegations of plagiarism and questions about his biographical claims were raised.

Jason Arday, a sociologist who joined Cambridge University in 2023 at age 37, resigned on Wednesday following weeks of scrutiny over alleged plagiarism and inconsistencies in his personal narrative. In a statement, Arday said the "relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love," and added that his departure should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing. He described the decision as reaching "the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure."

The allegations originated in July when Nathan Cofnas, a philosopher and former Cambridge researcher, reported that software analysis of Arday's doctoral thesis and later papers identified passages that closely matched the work of other scholars without proper citation. Cofnas told CBS News that he found "extensive plagiarism," noting instances of verbatim copying and minor re-phrasing without attribution. Cofnas said he began the review after being alerted by a Cambridge academic who described Arday as a "plagiarist and fabulist."

Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his PhD, previously investigated claims concerning his dissertation and reported no evidence of academic misconduct. However, Cofnas also questioned Arday's broader biographical statements, including claims of raising millions of pounds for charity through endurance challenges and publishing a book, which other media outlets could not verify.

Supporters have argued that the investigation reflects an ideological campaign targeting Arday because of his research on race and inequality, while critics contend the case highlights concerns about academic standards and the influence of diversity, equity and inclusion policies in higher education. Neither Arday nor Cambridge University responded to requests for comment.
