Explosive drone found at Leipzig/Halle Airport prompts security concerns

Resumen

German officials say a drone loaded with explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, marking a new escalation in drone-related threats and prompting expanded defence measures.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said a drone equipped with a large amount of explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, describing it as a "new level of threat" and part of a "hybrid attack scenario." He added that the incident likely involved more than amateur operators and suggested that foreign actors could be behind it, though no specific country was identified.

The device, which failed to detonate because its detonator detached, follows a series of unauthorized drone flights and sabotage attempts at the airport. In July 2024, investigators linked four parcels with incendiary devices, sent via courier services, to a plot that could have caused a plane crash. The airport, a major European cargo hub handling over 2,500 tonnes of freight daily, also serves as a strategic military logistics centre, supporting NATO's heavy-lift Antonov aircraft and recent operations related to the war in Ukraine.

Germany has recorded 151 drone incidents nationwide in 2023, with Leipzig/Halle and Frankfurt airports each reporting 21 cases. In response, the federal government has expanded drone-defence capabilities, allowing the federal police to shoot down drones under certain conditions since October 2025 and installing a specialised defence system at Leipzig/Halle. Security experts note that detection remains the primary challenge, requiring radar, cameras or frequency scanners before any counter-measure can be applied.
