North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick placed on medical leave
Head coach Bill Belichick announced that his son, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, is on medical leave, with no timetable for his return, and the defensive staff will coach collectively.
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick said on Thursday that defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave, without providing a timeline for his return. The announcement came after Steve Belichick was absent from the opening practice media viewing and unavailable for scheduled interviews.
"Just want to let everyone know that my son Steve’s on medical leave, and look forward to getting him back as soon as possible," Bill Belichick said, adding that he could not comment further because it is a medical situation. Bill Belichick explained that the defensive staff will handle coaching duties collectively during his son's absence, stating that all members of the defensive staff will be involved. The Tar Heel defense, which was ranked 59th nationally by SP+ last season, allowed 4.9 yards per play in 2025, ranking 30th, and limited explosive plays to 3.34 per game, ranking 11th. However, opponents converted 42.68 percent of third-down attempts, placing the team 95th in that category. Bill Belichick noted the program is ahead of the previous year, citing continuity in player evaluation and development through spring and summer sessions.
