Rams defensive coordinator says Aaron Donald's potential return would be a major boost
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of Aaron Donald rejoining the Los Angeles Rams and noted the impact his return could have on the team's defense.
Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula told reporters on Wednesday that a return by former defensive tackle Aaron Donald would be a significant addition to the team. Shula recalled working with Donald in 2017 and highlighted his work ethic and talent, saying the combination makes him one of the sport's most accomplished players. Donald participated in a tryout session earlier in the week, which Shula said was intended more for Donald to assess his own readiness than for the coaching staff to evaluate him.
Shula acknowledged that the Rams are continuing to develop their defensive scheme with the personnel currently on the roster, and any decision by Donald to return would be integrated into that ongoing process. He also noted that pairing Donald with fellow defensive end Myles Garrett has been a topic of discussion, though it would not alter the team's current building strategy.
"When you have extreme talent and a matching work ethic, you get one of the greatest of all time," Shula said.
If Donald were to rejoin the Rams, Shula said it would force opposing offenses to adjust their blocking schemes to contend with two of the league's most dominant defensive players.
