White House helipad construction proceeds amid lack of formal approvals

Resumen

Construction of a new helipad on the White House grounds began in June without congressional or fine-arts commission clearance, while other renovation projects continue across the executive residence and Washington, D.C.

Work on a helipad for the White House started in June, according to reports, without prior public announcement or formal approvals from Congress or the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. A White House spokesperson told the New York Times that operational upgrades such as the helipad do not require commission review, although previous administrations have sought such clearance.

President Trump has said the helipad is needed to prevent helicopter exhaust from damaging the South Lawn grass. The project is one of at least 18 major construction initiatives launched by the administration in Washington, D.C., which together are estimated to cost about $1.2 billion. A White House official indicated that most of the funding is expected to come from taxpayer dollars.

Other ongoing projects include a ballroom renovation, security upgrades to the main entrance, repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and renovations to the Rose Garden and the Lincoln Bedroom bathroom. The administration has also pursued various park improvements throughout the city.
