Progressive Sunrise Movement co-founder wins Michigan 7th District Democratic primary

सारांश

William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, secured the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, setting up a general-election contest against Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in a key battleground seat.

William Lawrence, a co-founder of the progressive Sunrise Movement, won the Democratic primary in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, according to NBC News projections. Lawrence defeated two former officials, former Ambassador Bridget Brink and retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam, who split the district’s moderate Democratic vote.

The district, which President Donald Trump carried by a narrow margin in 2024, will see Lawrence face incumbent Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in the November election. Super PACs and outside groups have earmarked significant advertising dollars for the race, making it one of the most heavily funded House contests.

Lawrence’s campaign received endorsements and financial support from a range of progressive organizations, and a super PAC contributed more than $1 million in the final weeks of the primary. Some Democrats expressed concern that Republican interests might be backing Lawrence, viewing him as a more vulnerable general-election opponent.

Other competitive primaries were held in Michigan’s 4th and 10th districts, as well as in several swing districts across Virginia, Missouri, and Washington state, where incumbents and challengers alike are positioning for the upcoming midterm elections.
